Since the FDA approved PrEP in 2012, a wealth of information has emerged about this vital HIV prevention method. But with that comes miscommunication, and miscommunication leads to myths. But we're here to dispel some of that misinformation for you.

Myth: PrEP is only for gay men.

Fact: There are no gender or sexuality requirements for you to meet to take PrEP. PrEP is for anyone who is at risk of contracting HIV.

PrEP can protect you if you do not have HIV and any of the following scenarios apply to you within the last 6 months:

  • You have engaged in anal or vaginal sex and:
    • Have a sexual partner who is HIV positive, particularly if their viral load status is unknown or detectable,
    • Have inconsistently used condoms, or
    • Have received a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection.

You engage in injection drug use and:

  • Share injection equipment with an HIV-positive partner, or
  • Share needles, syringes, or other drug injection paraphernalia.

Myth: You can’t get other STIs like gonorrhea and syphilis if you’re on PrEP.

Fact: While PrEP has revolutionized HIV prevention, it does not protect against other STIs or even pregnancy. Being on PrEP and using other preventative methods like condoms is the most effective way to stay safe while getting spicy.

Myth: It’s difficult and expensive to get on PrEP.

Myth: You only need to take PrEP if you have had unprotected sex recently.

Fact:PrEP is 99% effective in preventing HIV transmission, but only when it’s taken consistently. Even when you’re not actively having sex.

Myth: You don’t need PrEP if you’re a top.

Fact: No matter what position you are in, whether you give or receive, the HIV risks are the same.

Myth: PrEP has bad side effects.

Fact:Some may experience side effects from PrEP, including nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, depression, insomnia, and others. These side effects are typically mild and tend to go away in time. If you are taking PrEP, tell your clinician if you have any side effects that do not go away after regularly taking it.

Myth: You have to be on PrEP for the rest of your life.

Fact: You can go off PrEP at any time, and restart PrEP at any time.
